Water and Outdoor Activities:

Outdoor Trails

The Massanutten trails are fun to hike and perfect for kids. From Trevino, take a right onto Del Webb Drive, go about 1 mile to the end, up to the Overlook, which is also a fun photo op. Bring lots of water! These two trails are available:

Massanutten Ridge Trail and Overlook

As you park, you will see a staircase. This trail starts out very nice and flat for quite a ways, then gets progressively narrower, steeper, and rockier (rock scrambling hard).  Some views depending on foliage cover. Here is a review of the trail (I am not aware of any goats though!) http://virginiatrailguide.com/2010/06/03/massanutten-ridge-trail/

Kaylor’s Knob

This is a great trail, uphill climb, less populated than the Massanutten Ridge Trail. Cross the road from the parking area and see trailhead.

National Parks

Shenandoah National Park

Shenandoah National Park is a 15-20 min drive to the entrance.  From here you can drive to overlooks and trails. There are facilities for dining at Skyland and Big Meadows. $30 entrance fee per car, good for 7 days, worth it!!

We recommend driving North (the Central District) and hiking the South River Falls Trail. Park at South River Picnic Grounds – see sign to trail. Circuit Trail 4.3 miles with some elevation change.

Another option is the Dark Hollow Trail.  Dark Hollow Falls is a beautiful series of waterfalls and cascades in Shenandoah National Park and is one of the most popular hikes in the park. The Dark Hollow Falls Trail is a “moderate” 1.4 mi/2.2 km out-and-back hike. From the trailhead at mile 50.7 of Skyline Drive, follow the trail .75 mi/1.2 km down to the falls and return along the same route. The trail down has some steep sections and the hike up can be challenging. No pets.

The Rose River Loop Trail is a 4 mi/6.4 km trail following the Rose River that connects to the end of the Dark Hollow Falls Trail. From the north end of Fishers Gap parking at mile 49.4, cross Skyline Drive and start down the road. Just after the chain, take a left onto the Skyland-Big Meadows Horse Trail (yellow blazed). In about .6 mi/.9 km take the blue-blazed Rose River Loop Trail. Follow it past beautiful falls and cascades. You’ll climb back to the road (yellow blazed), and go right across the bridge. For an added treat (and about .25 mi/.4 km more hiking), you can take the Dark Hollow Falls Trail to the base of the falls and back. Then continue uphill about one mile back to Skyline Drive. This hike can take between 4-5 hours.

Or ask the ranger at the park entrance about hiking the Appalachian Trail.

Old Rag Mountain

Old Rag Mountain is an hour (plus) drive. All day hike, 9 mile circuit.  Very popular/crowded but very well known and a bucket list hike for many. Weekdays less crowded.
